☞ INTRODUCING: FD Debuts on FDB Circle?
The long awaited debut of the bronze statue of Frederick Douglass at Frederick Douglass Circle may just be at hand. The circular plaza that is on the northwest corner of Central Park and at the base of FDB/8th Avenue has been under construction for what seems to be an eternity. The statue itself has been under a white tarp for most of 2009 so it was quite a site today to see FD himself glance back amongst the green spring foliage. It's yet to be seen if this is just a temporary reveal as in the past, but the plaza looks pretty finished to us at this point. Photo by Ulysses

I like the location of this statue at Central Park NW along with the Duke Ellington Circle at Central Park NE as they both reaffirm that this is now Harlem.
ReplyDeleteWere the controversial references to the (debunked as fake) "quilt code" ever included with the statue?

An eternity is right. Under construction since at least 2004..
ReplyDeleteThe traffic is crazy around the circle. Hope they adjust the light to let people walk to the island.
ReplyDeleteSix years to make a traffic circle seems a bit too long in my mind.
ReplyDeleteThe golden gate bridge was built in 4 years and 3 months.
I just got off the 'C' train - and you will be disappointed to know that they've wrapped FD up again!
ReplyDeleteLynn, at some point the project was reconfigured as "Abu Ghraib Circle" -- the hooded prisoner is to be fenced off forever.
