☞ INTRODUCING: The New Overlook Pavilion

The century old Overlook Pavilion right by Grant's Tomb looks like it will be opening by summertime. After decades of decay, the entire pavilion that provides a Hudson River view was gated off about a year ago and its neoclassical columns and canopy have been in the process of restoration ever since. The lower photo shows the ivy and graffiti covered pavilion a couple of years back. When we walked by last week, we saw that the plywood fence was down but there was still some work being done at this corner just west of the tomb at 122nd Street. to get to this location, take the 1 train to the 116th Street-Columbia University stop on Broadway. Walk six blocks North to 122nd Street and two blocks West to Riverside Drive. Photo by Ulysses

  1. This pavilion along with the other pavilion located further up on Riverside Drive between W.181st and Dyckman St were used as a sort of "lovers lane" for couples.

They could be seen strolling along to these pavilions, hand in hand and there they would be watching the sunset in between kissing, cooing and cuddling!

Many times the the young lovers in my set, not having much money for dates or having anywhere to hang out, would often walk here to steal small romantic moments together.

It was a touch of innocence during the sometimes turbulent times of the late '60's-early '70's.

My mom who also grew up all around the West Harlem,Hamilton Heights, Hudson Heights and Washington Heights area would go to these places as well with the same intent!

Sometimes you could see the colege kids sculling on the Hudson River while being able to view the Palisades on the other side of the river at New Jersey.
