Ever marvel at the number and diversity of trees that make a home for themselves in the heart of Manhattan? Wonder what makes such a thriving urban oasis possible? Central Park provides habitat for over 24,000 trees, and 152 different species, including the largest contiguous stand of American Elms left in the country. Maintaining this many trees over the Park's 152-year history doesn't happen naturally; it takes careful planning, highly trained arborists, lots of public support, and -yes- a little help from mother nature. In the Central Park Conservancy’s newest gallery exhibit, Under the Canopy: Caring for Central Park’s Trees, explore the lives of Central Park's trees through their natural history and the Conservancy's innovative tree care program.This special Harlem Meer Social Hour will include an exhibit interpretation by Central Park Conservancy staff, refreshments, and plenty of time to enjoy the exhibit.
