☞ REMEMBER: 145th and 8th Avenue circa 1940
There are multiple photos of the 8th Avenue elevated train in lower Harlem but we haven't seen many that provide a glimpse of it winding its way further up town. The above archival photo from 1940 gives a sense of what it was like to have the train tracks on what would today be known as Frederick Douglass Boulevard. The same view at the junction of 145th Street and FDB looking north can be seen at the current photo taken this week. Note all the buildings have been replaced on the left corner by the new condos that have risen on this block that continues west to Jackie Robinson Park. The elevated 8th Avenue Train was dismantled sometimes after the 1940's and the neighborhood today enjoys a relatively peaceful skyline with the A,B,C,D subway buried beneath the ground at St. Nicholas Avenue.
