☞ ARCHITECTURE: St. James Presbyterian

There are a lot of magnificent churches in Harlem, but the St. James Presbyterian Church at St. Nicholas and 141st Street is probably one of the more well-appointed ones. The compact Gothic church, designed by Valentine and Ludlow and finished in 1905, sits handsomely on the corner of the intersection facing St. Nicholas Park. In fact, the church's first name was the St. Nicholas Avenue Presbyterian Church, up until 1927 when the congregation sold the building to St. James Presbyterian. Another interesting note is that the Harlem School of the Arts started its first classes in the basement of the church almost half a century ago. The closest subway to this location is the A,B,C,D at 145th or the B,C at 135th Street. Photos by Ulysses
