☞ READ: New Children's Zone Building Planned
The city and a group of philanthropist announced recently that a new $100 million Harlem's Children Zone building will be built on one of Central Harlem's public housing sites. The HCZ charter school plans to help out the community in the long run, but it was the affect on this corner of a major public housing block that interested us also. The St. Nicholas Houses span 127th to 130th Street, between FDB/8th Avenue and ACP/7th Avenue, and the city will be providing a unique parcel of land for the new development. The lower photo shows west 129th street as it ends in a cul-de-sac in between the two boulevards. Many of the larger Urban Renewal projects erased entire street off the city grid and in this case, West 129th Street stops abruptly instead of connecting both sides of the avenues. Not only will the street be corrected, but the new building might even freshen up a block of dated architecture (the top photo shows the HCZ building on 125th Street). Read more details in the GothamSchool.org article and see a map of the planned revision of the block: LINK. HCZ photo by Ulysses
