☞ REVIVE: Harlem Parks Benefit from Volunteers

So it's no secret that Harlem has some great parks but many do not know that much of their upkeep and progress depends on local community activism. On Sunday, we noticed what looked like bus loads of tourist invading the northern section of St. Nicholas Park, but it turned out to be the Junior League volunteering their time to help fix things up. This was part of It's My Park! Day which was sponsored by The Friends of St. Nicholas Park. New rose bushes were planted along the 141st Street side of the park and the cast iron fences got a fresh coat of paint. Another park organization, The Friends of Morningside Park, just recently worked with local politicians to get beautiful new cast iron lamp posts set up along its perimeter. The Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association is the third and oldest local organization in Harlem that works with its historic park. They all have websites so check them out, beautify your parks, get to know your neighbors, and make things happen.
