☞ SHOP: Target Aiming for East Harlem

There is so much media coverage of the Target set to open in East Harlem on 125th Street and this might be the thing that the out-of-reach East River Plaza might need to get business going again. We were in Times Square for an event this past weekend and notice that the new Target ads on one of the buildings had the Apollo featured. Why? Well, it turns that there will be a stage replication of the Apollo at a huge July 21st private event that will have celebrities entertained by Harlem's own Doug E. Fresh and catering courtesy of Marcus Samuelsson. Michelle Obama's preferred designer Isabelle Toledo will surely be on hand since she is collaborating with the mega brand on a beachwear line. Further fanfare will include draping the ostensible pedestrian bridges with massive Target advertisements until September. Read more in the Wall Street Journal: LINK. 1. A total NIMBY. We want big boxes in proximity, but NIMBY. That's why well heeled communities don't let them in or fight like hell to keep them from coming too close. Tactics of diversion, that's all this is above. Celebration? More like a Funeral for that immediate community...and so many of them just don't know it.

  2. Would love for this place to do well, but man, just seems so far out of the way from transportation for us ny'ers. I'm a member at CostCo, but it is still a real effort every time we have to go there.

  3. I really like this Costco and now the Target adds more choice, it would be great if the MTA M116 bus was routed a little closer, right now the M116 does some strange loop of east Harlem that goes near but not up to the Plaza entrance.

  4. It's a weird set up with the gypsy cabs. A high-end commercial outfit coupled with a shady cab operation is just bizarre (initially I liked the cab thing, but have found them charging more than the estimated rate). Now find myself heading up to the Target in the Bronx more often than not, which is actually easier to get to from 125th.

  5. There does seem to be an access problem with this location.
If Target were smart they would introduce a FREE van or bus service that runs along 116th to the 2,3 and B,C trains. IKEA has always done this for their Red Hook location and the NJ location and it has worked out well.
Also all the commercial tenants at the East River Plaza should work with the MTA to have better bus service to the location.

  6. 12:47pm - You said it! Shuttle buses would pay off not only for Target but for the mall in general.

  7. Just to add...the times I have taken the M116 it has been a nightmare. SLOW and packed like sardines.

  8. Just read the WSJ article about it.

What do they mean by "The 10-car No. 6 train that will deposit riders on a platform linking to the store by a pedestrian bridge will be wrapped through September from stem to stern in Target's iconic red-and-white advertising."

How are they going to have a bridge all they way from the 6 to the East River plaza?

  9. One Subway stop up and I can be at Target with out ever having to step foot in East Harlem.

  11. Not sure Pete lol. For a second there I thought I was losing my mind. Get off on 116th and just look for the magical floating platform to whisk you away to Target haha.

  12. Well, sir, there's nothing on earth
    Like a genuine,
    Bona fide,
    Electrified,
    Six-car
    Monorail!!!

  13. Actually, a monorail system would be absolutely perfect for crossing 125th from west to east and all the way to LaGuardia. Something along the lines of London's docklands light rail would work wonders!
