☞ BESPOKE: The Canines at 199 Lenox Avenue
There's a beautiful corner building at 120th and Lenox that has a somewhat unusual carving on the brownstone stoop. The decorative elements usually found in 19th century buildings include floral motifs, mythological beings, horses, lions, angels and cherubs but rare are the ones displaying pets. Building number 199 Lenox has one of those animal themed carvings and one can see from the center photo that there are two dogs prominently centered at the front entrance of the building. The juvenile canines blend right in with the style of the building so its easy to pass by many times before realizing that they are there. This building has the only pet motif that we have seen in Harlem thus far so they are quite unique. All photos by Ulysses

This is such a beautiful building. Hope it gets a spiffing up sometime.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the close-up. I confess I never noticed the motif.
That's 120th St and Lenox. Beautiful building.
ReplyDeleteI was just admiring that building on a walk Saturday night. The slender windows are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI see on streeteasy that it's a rental building, with the usual bland renovated interior... too bad!
ReplyDeleteKaila, they can't all have the holy original details you know ;)
ReplyDeleteA little bland on the inside, but an amazing building all the same. Great location.
Off topic, anybody know how much it would cost to install central air in a brownstone duplex? Wiring would prob. need to be upgraded. Ta.
A gorgeous building. I actually like the avenue facing brownstones as rentals - it brings foot traffic to the avenues.
ReplyDeleteChris - Central a/c in a brownstone is a major job. Can cost $100k for 4 floors ... less sure about how 2 floors.
I'd look into ductless. Much cheaper to install (half the cost) and you don't have to drop the ceilings which is nice too. You can often hide the systems in walls or closets or cielings. However, you'll need to put the compressor somewhere outside (on the roof for backyard) so you need to be set up this way. Good luck!
The owners live at least on the bottom 2 floors. A great building and long-term investment for them with plenty of rental income.
ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful Harlem gem. Great stairs.
