  1. My building is pretty much right around the corner from 208 Lenox;, thanks to the link Ulysses provided, I purchased a copy of the 1980 tax roll photo of my building. People who spent their life on this block told me it had been a shell but I was unprepared. ‘Shell’ is generous. Neither it nor its next door twin even had remaining stoops. Window and doors had been cinderblocked, upper floors wide open.

So when we are inclined to fret over the future of Harlem well. . . already come a hell of a long way.

  2. Sanou's Mum - You must pay your taxes more quickly than I because mine hasn't come yet. I can't wait ... I assume you have seen the Jose Vergara lost city stuff. The Harlem phots are unbelievable ...

  3. Green Girl--arrived in Saturday's post. Perhaps yours will come tomorrow. 1940s photo had no automobiles on the street and what seems like an airconditioner in an upper window. Odd.

Not sure I am familiar with Jose Vergara's work.

  4. Just google his name and "lost cities Harlem" .. it's pretty cool. There is a map and you can zoom in on photos of different parts of Harlem. Think there was a post on this a few months ago but maybe I am mis-remembering ...
