☞ VOTE: CB10 Reviews West 123rd Street Lot

Tonight, Wednesday, August 18th, 6:30 PM at the Oberia Dempsey Center. We mentioned the controversy over the ADC owned parking lot on West 123rd Street (between ACP/7th and FDB/8th) last month and a reader just pointed out that Community Board 10 will be voting on the new project's approval today. The West 123rd Street Block Association has posted flyers stating that the new, taller affordable housing building will overwhelm the brownstone block that currently surround the parking lot (top photo). Another point to note is that the low-level housing projects on the 124th Street side (middle photo) would be left abandoned for up to three years while the new building is under construction.

Those said buildings currently on the 124th Street side are also on the same block as the new Aloft Hotel. That proximity makes an interesting scenario for future development if the ADC plans on doing something with those properties. Does anyone have any leads either way? For those who want to speak up to the CB10 Land Use Committee, show up at 127 West 127th Street tonight (click on flyer to enlarge). 1. Seems to me that it's a better use of the land than a parking lot.

Instead of advocating against any development at all, I'd say these folks should be pressing for the best possible building design -- and to make it a mixed-income (rather than a low- or no-income) development.

  2. Not sure what to make of this one. That car park seems like a huge waste of space to me (as with all the car parks allotted to the projects across the city).

  3. Speaking of Aloft - last night as i was making my way down 124th, i saw them hauling new mattresses into the soon to be hotel. i guess they're moving along on some level.

  5. The Block Association is not advocating against any development "at all" and, in fact, has repeatedly conveyed to ADC that it would not oppose a 4-5 story building fitting within the contextual envelope of the block. The problems with this project are many, including turning 124th Street into an abandoned wasteland that will, inevitably, result in a serious public safety hazard, and well as the urban blight.

  6. Hope someone who goes will let the rest of us lazy-assed people know what took place.
