☞ EAT: Makana Opens in East Harlem

Folks who are out shopping at Target this weekend might want to check out the new Hawaiian Japanese BBQ take-out that recently opened at 2245 1st Avenue (between 115th & 116th).  Unlike the odd fusion parings that went away with the 1990's, Makana serves up the authentic various mash of cuisine found on those Pacific islands.  There's a lot of cross cultural Japanese influences to be found including sushi that is prepared to order at a perfunctory sushi bar and Spam Musubi.  Hawaiians apparently have Spam in everything and thus the sushi combo which consist of a teriyaki glazed ham and rice balls wrapped in seaweed (2 pieces are pretty substantial).  There's also Hawaiian pork BBQ, bento boxes and the saucy Loco Moco.  The interior is not anything to really romance over but there are a handful of small tables for those who want to stick around. Worth checking out for the curiosity factor. Tel. 212.996.3534. Check out Yelp for more details: LINK.
