☞ SHOP: Bakery at Tribal Spears Space Update

A reader mentioned that there seems to be more activity on the old Tribal Spears cafe space at 2167 FDB/8th Avenue, between 116th and 117th Street, since some guys in suits were walking around the space this week. We reported a couple of month ago that permits for a bakery was set in place earlier this year and this is what the tipster found out recently:

"Months ago I heard that Levain Bakery was interested in the space. I asked a worker at the upper west side Levain Bakery if it was true that they were considering a space in Harlem and this person said she'd heard something about it.."

We checked on the DOB site and there seems to be permits that have been approved this month and the business name on the filing is indeed Levain Bakery (scroll all the way down on permit page): LINK. Check out the Levain Bakery website to see what they are about: www.LevainBakery.com

  1. It seems as though all they make are four different types of cookies...is that right? If that's the case, I'd hardly call it a "bakery".

  2. Nope, definitely a bakery. Freshly baked bread, cinnamon roles, cookies. I have been to the one on the Upper West Side and it is constantly packed. This would be a truly outstanding addition to the neighborhood and another sign that Harlem is continuing it's relentless march forward.

  3. Levain makes arguably the best cookies I've ever bought. It's a tremendous, yet dangerous, option to have so close to home. I asked the UWS staff about their planned Harlem location and they confirmed that they expected to open on this block. They indicated that they just had some construction delays. They've mentioned their Harlem expansion on their Facebook page, but didn't announce the exact location.

  4. Woah, this place is going to be dangerous -- for some of our waistlines...

We're not talking about a "cookie." We're talking about a massive load of hot, gooey, awesomeness. The "four types" are pretty much all they need, and they do seem to routinely line people up out the door on the UWS.

    You've been warned.

  5. Additionally if people see places in the neighborhood that they think need trees, go to the website and click on "I know a good place for a tree" and fill out the form. If everyone does it up and down FDB I am sure it will generate attention.
