☞ DWELL: 57 West 119th Sold in September

Back in May, the brownstone at 57 West 119th Street mysteriously went on the market and was listed as already being in contract based on Streeteasy: LINK.  The asking price of $1.75 million for a 17 foot wide, 3,536 square foot, 2-family home looked a little high for a house in the Mount Morris Park Historic District that might need some work on it.  There are no photos of the interior around but apparently it must have been in pretty good condition since the final selling price reported in September was exactly $1.75 million based on public record. It's not the widest house so getting the full asking price is quite an accomplishment. Thoughts?

  1. Immediate thoughts are this is another strong sign that the market in Harlem is continuing to march forward/upward. This is exactly what I and others forecast would happen earlier this year when projects such as the Aloft Hotel, Red Rooster, Hyatt and various other enterprises began to take shape. Expect the trend to continue as one by one, these new businesses open and brownstones, piece by piece, continue to be sold and renovated.

  2. I know that street fairly well. Casa Frela is just a few doors down & I'm on the street several times a week. The other day a 'For Sale' sign went up outside that Townhouse. Is it for sale again??

  3. That’s crazy $. No house on this block, even during the height of the market, went for that much. House next to mine, in great shape, has been on the market since early summer for less and is not moving. Many buildings on this block are for sale averaging around 770,000.

Is the Lost Treasure of Nicky Barnes buried in the basement?

  4. Good point. There are several townhouses for sale right accross the street. There are also several totally abandoned & totally distressed townhouses on that same block just sitting there (not for sale & not lived in). The fact that a 'For Sale' sign just went up recently is a mystery, considering that streeteasy shows it as having been sold in Sept.

  5. Some aren't legally abandoned. They have owners but owners are non compis. Some ARE abandoned. Some were seized. Some are pissoirs It's a funky block but I love it.

You sure you're not thinking of a building slightly closer to Lenox? Sign just went up with Real Estete [sic] broker on it. I'm going to trust someone who can't even spell their profession?

  7. It would be interesting to see if that new 'For Sale' sign is at #57. I'll check tomorrow (unless you check tonight)

  9. OK, AFL, you’ve been standing too close to the turpentine. There’s no for sale sign outside 57. And, oddly, it’s fully occupied (and they were probably wondering who was skulking about outside) and not furnished in a way—how do I say this tactfully—in a 1.76 mil way.

So check out 79, I think that may be the for sale sign you were thinking about. Just went up end of last week. Complete with the misspelling.

  10. I'd be really surprised if this house was up for sale. I used to live in the garden apartment. The owners are a super-sweet couple with a lot of dogs. I've been on the main floor and it is gorgeously done. If you want to see the inside, you can watch the video of Beyonce's "If I Were a Boy," which was shot in their kitchen and bedroom.

  11. I was curious enough to watch the music video to get a glimpse of the inside and chuckled privately at the idea of a NYPD cop being able affording $1.75M brownstone on his/her salary.

  12. @Pensamientos. . .in my window peering I only saw the garden level floor not the parlour so I am sure it is lovely as you say.

That said, I don’t see tons of dogs down that way. . . perhaps new owners since you lived there?

Remember them shooting that video. Much excitement on the block.
