☞ BESPOKE: Harlem Tailor Starts Free Courses
DNAinfo follows up on the story of the Hamilton Heights tailor who was offering free courses in pant construction to combat the saggy pant phenomenon amongst young men. Marion Anderson, 84, has been a tailor for 40 years and provides classes out of his brownstone at 419 West 141st Street which faces St. Nicholas Park. Apparently many folks read the articles in the local papers and phone calls came flooding in. Out of the first inaugural class (which include students from the Bronx and East New York), a small trio are now thinking of starting a clothing line. This is one of my favorite stories ever! I'd wanted to jump in and do a video when you first posted about him, and didn't get to it. Maybe there's still a window ...
ReplyDeletetotally great; my experience dictates that this is indeed a vanishing vocation. All I can find are dry-cleaners offering "expert alterations" that are anything but... Does this guy actually do alterations or just teach? Can anyone recommend another good old-school tailor in Central Harlem?
