☞ REMEMBER: The Mt. Morris Tunnel circa 1936
Having a park with a huge mountain in the middle of it is really annoying to have at the center of 5th Avenue for 4 blocks in the 120's so guess what the city was planning to do in the 1920's and 1930's? Enter the age of the automobile and Robert Moses' grand vision of running a tunnel through what would become today's Marcus Garvey Park. This reminds us of the near miss that Washington Square Park went through since a freeway was planned for that particular car-decelerating traffic obstacle. Luckily, none of the park-crushing plans went through and both are still intact today. Check out the interesting Parks Department page on the various rocks formations around town and how the one in Harlem had a tunnel planned for it: LINK
