☞ EAT: Did Orbit in East Harlem Close?
The downtown-style cafe called Orbit at First Avenue and 116th Street has reportedly closed down. A reader had been asking about its status since the eatery hasn't been seen open in some time. We walked by in the early afternoon this past weekend and there definitely wasn't any activity to be seen at the business that was one of the newer establishments to open in this section of far East Harlem. The restaurant was noted for having live music events on the weekend and an open cafe for brunch during the warmer seasons so it definitely added something a little different to this corner of the nabe. There are not any signs up that states Orbit is officially closed and many websites still have it listed as open so we are not sure of the exact status on this one. Any tips out there?

I'm told that it's been closed since the summer "for renovations"...which we know in NYC usually means it's a wrap. I used to be a frequent patron but admittedly had not been by there in a few months (just circumstantial, not as a result of anything that happened). This was a great place with strong drinks, outdoor seating, and a highly underrated weekend brunch. Really upsetting to hear that they are closed.
ReplyDeleteThis is a shame. I've been there a couple of times. Nice place.
ReplyDeleteIf they had managed to hold on 'til this Summer the Hunter College School Of Social Work on 118 and 3rd would have been open by then.
That would have had to have been a boost for nearby area restaraunts(in addition to Central Harlem in general).
They officially have a "for rent" sign up now. I'm sad but not suprised. They opened right after I moved to the neighborhood and have been in slow decline ever since. It's a shame.
