☞ REMEMBER: 8th Avenue and 120th Circa 1928

Harlem's FDB corridor received much less light and must have been a whole lot noisier back when the 8th Avenue El used to speed up the boulevard.  The archival photo at top taken circa 1928 shows the view standing from 120th street with the camera peering north up 8th Avenue (click image to enlarge).  One of the most distinct buildings in the area is still standing today and can be found at the far right in both past and present images.  Those familiar with the block will recognize that the said structure is none other than the Triangle building which will open a cafe on the ground floor sometimes this year.  Most of these buildings had wood storefronts when they originally were built so the old photo provides a glimpse at what a more authentic restoration might look like.  The elevated trains were removed by the 1940's and cars nowadays have replaced the trolleys that used glide underneath them.

  1. Amazing. These photos always make me think of Time and Again (Jack Finney). Thanks Ulysses.

  2. Chris, great observation, I will now look at these old photos as a scene from the book.
