☞ READ: East Harlem M.E.C. in the Times
Harlem Bespoke covered the East Harlem business owners' response in losing the Eminent Domain lawsuit which would seize their property for the East Harlem Media Entertainment and Cultural Center back in October but it looks like the New York Times had the followup on the story this week: LINK. We walked around the south side between 125th and 127th Street on the block just east of Third Avenue this past weekend and took more photos of surrounding area. This entire section of far East 125th had buildings on it at one point but it turns out that the current barren nature of the area is due to a failed Urban Renewal plan that never got off the ground several decades ago. The dry cleaner service referenced in the article can be seen in the second photo at the far left (click on photo to enlarge). Check out our original post for the East Harlem owners group's extensive response to the court's judgement last year: LINK

The thing is, none of these businesses really serve the neighborhood. They're mostly pretty auto-oriented/regional market businesses. It's not like you're going to kill the business by moving it, and they are being given relatively good relocation packages I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteAnybody with eyes whose been in that area knows its blighted and has been for awhile now.
ReplyDeleteIs it possible to have negative amounts of sympathy for somebody? These businesses had sweetheart reantal/ownership deals in place i'm sure, hench the mock outrage.
But, if these guys are running car dealships and drycleaning places and fixtures clearing houses, they are doing pretty good cashwise (even before we talk about relocation packages) and can afford to relocate ESPECALLY the guy selling the fixtures. That guy has to be rolling in dough right about now.
