☞ READ: Harlem's Jazz Revival in the News

Jazz is such a historic trademark of Harlem and its revival seems to be getting more coverage these days since AMNY just published a piece on uptown's music upswing: LINK.  Harlem is definitely going through another cycle of change and the newspaper feature talks about how jazz is mostly a labor of love and not about a big paycheck these days. The above photos shows St. Nick's up on 148th Street which has been around since 1940 and one can see that the exterior probably hasn't been restored for a couple of decades.  There's an underground quality to it which some might fancy the space for (note the various random tape used for event posters) but there should definitely be some sort of fund to maintain these historic businesses in Harlem since they are part of New York's tourist attractions. Small steps can be seen in 2011 with the arrival of the Harlem Jazz Shrine Festival in May which is a first-ever event of this kind for this legendary Jazz capital of the world: LINK. For a little more history on Harlem's underground jazz past, check out the video in our previous post: LINK
