☞ SEE: Welcome to Shelbyville
Monday, February 7th, 6:30 PM-8:30 PM (screening startes at 7:00 PM), at the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Education Center, 3940 Broadway and 165th Street. Welcome to Shelbyville, a documentary by New York-based filmmaker Kim A. Snyder, is the focus of a special screening and discussion held in Harlem. Set against the backdrop of a shaky economy, the documentary " takes an intimate look at a southern town as its residents—whites and African Americans, Latinos and Somalis—grapple with their beliefs, their histories, and their evolving ways of life." The 67-minute film will air nationally on PBS' Independent Lens series in May 2011.
Following the film screening, Ms. Snyder joins with longtime Shelbyville, resident Beverly Hewitt (featured in the film) and New York-based community leaders in a discussion about immigration, civil rights, and integration. This special program presented by the Museum for African Art and the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Education Center marks Black History Month with a crucial discussion of race and immigration in America while exploring the way diverse communities can support one another along with building bridges one step at a time. www.theShabazzCenter.net
