☞ ARCHITECTURE: East Harlem's Mod Mansards
There are just few rare old wood frame mansard townhouses still standing throughout Harlem but some might be surprised to see that modern versions have been built uptown in the more recent decades. Those who have walked by the East Harlem block of 111th Street between Second and Third Avenue might notice that a contemporary take on the popular 19th century homes represent a good portion of the north side. One can see from the above photos that several row houses have been constructed in modern times that reflect a slight mansard slope at the roof line which even have dormer window detailing. The lower photo shows that each property has a gated front yard and that period inspired lamp posts are even up at one entrance. More flat-roof new townhouses using orange brick are quite common uptown but these miniature mansards definitely appear to be more unique.
