☞ REVIVE: Church of Nazareth in West Harlem
The Church of Nazareth building has been a burnt out shell in the Hamilton Heights Historic District for quite some time and now it appears a new owner might have a hand in trying to keep the landmark stable. Neighbors assumed that 72 Hamilton Terrace was still church-owned but a sidewalk shed has gone up on the site this past week announcing that HPD is currently the landlord. Did the city take the building back from the church since it could not repair it? Nobody knows for sure at this point. Old permits just have the church as the owners of the mansard building at the corner of 144th Street. Any tips? It's an official city landmark so government intervention would make sense. Check out more information and photos on this building in our past post: LINK

What a stunner. Hope it can be saved.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what the inside must of looked like? Its just such a lovely building on the exterior. I hope it gets refurbished nicely and strict attention to detail is paid to the exterior.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what happened to the Church once they lost this home in the fire?
It appears, the sidewalk shed was constructed and owned by the NYCHPD! According to NYC.GOV, Nazareth Deliverance Spiritual Church, INC is still the owner of the property. The filings have them listed as domestic not for profit corporation and they have been paying property taxes. Churches do not pay property taxes! The property is listed as an SRO. They are not registered with the State of NY as a Church and the property is not registered or zoned as a "Place of Worship" with NYC. Can anyone confirm and provide more information?
