☞ DWELL: Former Washington Theatre for Sale
One of the early 20th century movie palaces designed by Thomas W. Lamb is now up for sale in West Harlem. The New Covenant Temple building at the 1805 Amsterdam Avenue and 149th Street used to be the Washington Theatre which opened sometimes in 1910 when entertainment establishments were proliferating uptown. As of two weeks ago, the 97 foot wide, 36,432 square foot corner building in the Hamilton Heights area arrived on the market for the asking price of $11.5 million. There are no landmark restrictions at this point and the old theater is classified currently as a house of worship so the price seems to be aimed at a developer. We have not seen any recent photos of the interior but if any of it is intact, it should be something possibly worth saving: LINK
