☞ REMEMBER: Cushman's at 115th and 8th Ave
The last Cushman's bakery in Harlem that we found documented was the one right underneath the 8th Avenue El (today's FDB) and 115th Street. An archival photo from 1940 shows the year that the El tracks were being dismantled and one can see the recognizable store signage at the northeast side of the street. Some further research reveals that Cushman's was a nationwide chain with several shops throughout the city. Research photo courtesy NYPL

I think we may have had a Cushman's up in Washington Hts at about St. Nicholas Ave and West 162nd St. sometimes about 1961.
ReplyDeleteThere was also a Cushmans at 165th Street and st Nicholas. It was attached to what was the small bus depot for Port authority buses before they built the large one at the george washington bridge in the early 60's
DeleteI remember Cushman's. The best chocolate iced cupcakes I ever ate.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Harlem near 135th St. on Madison Ave. In the late 50s early 60s, there was a Cushman's either on 5th Ave. or Lenox Ave. near 135th St.
