The blocks around 125th Street and below in Harlem might have one too many chain stores for some folks but a recent Crain's article discusses how the northern nabes are looking to open more of this type of business. There is now an initiative by the city's Department of Small Business Services to identify neighborhoods that need more variety in retail options and north Harlem has been selected: LINK.
Basically new marketing material from the city department will be addressed to potential retailers desired in the neighborhood according to local business development corporations. Chains such as Duane Reade, Walgreens, Chipotle and fitness oriented retailers are some of the business mentioned. We had a post up previously on how the 145th Street retail hub has transformed that condo neighborhood in the past decade but not much else exists in the area around it: LINK
I was curious as to what exactly is meant by "North Harlem" in the Crain's NY article, so I tracked down the SBS press release:

The press release refers to "the Bradhurst area of Harlem" -- which I have to presume means anything in the vicinity of Bradhurst Avenue in Hamilton Heights (circa 145th). Seems a pretty granular designation for NYC SBS to make, but I suppose that reflects their decision to partner with community organizations working at a very local level.
I don't think Bradhurst counts as part of Hamilton Heights -- the "heights" part is the top of the hill, from Convent to Riverside. I live in Hamilton Heights and I don't think I've ever been as far east as Bradhurst except to get a Zipcar.
