☞ REMEMBER: The Holy Trinity Church at 125th
We could not find much about the church at Fifth Avenue and 125th Street in the above 1893 photo but Jonathan Gill's book on Harlem might have solved the mystery. In the chapters that describe the arrival of the German community in Harlem, a church on Fifth and 125th was mentioned as the Holy Trinity Church built in 1869 but would eventually not flourish because of a new wave of immigrants that would become predominant. Most notable was the Jewish community which eventually purchased the building in 1888 and changed the name to Temple Israel of Harlem. The congregation apparently moved on and by the early 1900s, a new commercial building would eventually rise on the lot: LINK
