☞ REMEMBER: Lunch Under the El circa 1940

The above old photo reveals a little lunch shack that used to be located on 8th Avenue just north of 125th Street. Taken around 1940, the image shows that even the smaller establishments of the day made an effort for the storefront to be as eye-catching as possible.  Painted window signs, dimensional gold leaf letter an a neon arrow most definitely attracted the gaze of hungry pedestrians.  Check out what this storefront looks likes in modern times after the jump.

Well, there's not much to write about here as one can see. The low-rise building probably does not get any second glances these days and most have probably walked without thinking about. Note also that the address to the left is were the Amsterdam News is located at and that building still stands today.  Archival photo via NYPL

  2. But at least the Amsterdam News Building saved some of its original detail. I've been in that Amsterdam News building and OMG! The stairs leading up to the offices are very steep.
