☞ REMEMBER: The 115th Street Library c. 1913

One of the more unique public libraries in the city can be found on West 115th Street between FDB/8th and ACP/7th Avenue. An old photo from about 1913 shows the building that appears to be one long facade base without the traditional brick shaft after the first couple of levels.  Note also in modern times details such as the casement windows are still intact but the functional awnings are no longer present. Most of the other libraries uptown have similar proportions but this particular one is the odd one in the bunch.   Archival photo via NYPL

  1. Ya know I notice that in a lot of thesse old photos there are functional awnings over the windows and one wonders why were they taken away in the first place?

  2. Because they were cloth and I imagine wore out. And probably required a fair amount of cleaning and needed to be maintained. Cranked up. Cranked down.

And then God created central airconditioning.

    They are pretty swank, though.
