☞ REMEMBER: 58-52 East 128th Street c. 1932
A school building currently takes up the entire block at East 128th Street and Madison but an old photo form 1932 shows that there was quite a variation of housing stock that used to be on the south east corner of the street. Numbers 58-52 East 128th Street were especially interesting since the wood frame homes had elevated porches and contrast painted facade details. There were also a few brownstones on the block but all appear to have been demolished by the early 1960s based on DOB records on file. Archival photo courtesy NYPL

My neighbour attended this school and said it was purposely built without windows by an architect following the dictate that windows distracted students. Which of course they do but when you consider this, the alternative,. . . well, distract away
ReplyDeleteI lived right across from IS201. This school opened the year my family left Harlem for the Bronx, UHG. My siblings and I attended PS42 which was down the street towards Madison. There use to be a very large church that stood in that spot and a Chinese laundry on the corner of Park. Wow memories......
