☞ REMEMBER: Shakespeare in Harlem c. 1942
Illustrations from the 1940s and 1950s always really stand out in a graphic way and the above cover from a book of poems still looks relevant today. The year was 1942 and Shakespeare in Harlem was a collection of poems from Harlem's own Langston Hughes with illustrations by E. McKnight Kauffer. Fortune lines on the hand, a roll of the dice and a wishbone alludes to the contents of the book which was being sold during the Depression years. Image courtesy NYPL
