☞ READ: Harlem as the Next Borough

A Gothamist post from yesterday points out that the latest issue of Amtrak magazine apparently states that Harlem is a borough of New York City: LINK.  As most uptowners know, the Village of Harlem is actually within Manhattan but many confuse its neighborhoods as not being on New York City's main island. Amtrak magazine notes that Harlem is the new hot borough nabe to visit and has Bier International featured in the main photo so we can forgive the slight mistake.  Read the full story here: LINK

  1. Well written article that seems to do a good job of introducing Harlem to first time visitors. I agree with the author, the best subway into Harlem is the 2/3 125th Lenox stop as it puts you right in the heart of Harlem. It seems the article lead in confuses Harlem as a borough, the article itself does not have the same error. Always good to see Harlem getting good press.

  2. Good article but lots of inaccuracies in addition to the burough. Harlem's ONLY farmers market in Mt. Morris Park? Really? Harlem is at the northern "end" of Manhattan? Yes it's the Northern half but not the Northern end! Oh well. Good press nonetheless.

  3. It's not surprising that the editor made this mistake. I constantly have to tell New Yorkers, both native and transplanted, that Harlem is not 1) a part of the Bronx, 2) its own borough, or 3) its own city.

  4. That's why editors get paid. So these stupid mistakes get caught. This is a travel magazine for Pete's sake and if the writer is too dim to figure out where she is the editor should at least be able to use Google maps.

But as far as I am concerned Harlem IS its own city.
