☞ BESPOKE: Brownstone Stoop Gardens

Proud homeowners uptown often decorate their front stoops with makeshift gardens by setting out potted plants outside of the front stoop during the warm weather seasons.  Walking by Hamilton Terrace on a recent excursion, we noticed that one of the townhouses had roses and even bamboo out front and this most definitely brightened up the historic block. A couple of planters in the parlor windows also help add to the verdant affect along with a couple of potted plants on the neighboring stoop.  Harlem has one of the largest open air garden centers in the city on the east side so those interested should check out The Urban Garden Center: LINK

  1. Great story, I appreciate brownstone stoop plantings and creative window boxes, it is fun to walk the side streets of Harlem and discover these mini gardens on display.

  2. I make a real effort with my stoop. Most of the block really enjoys it, especially the elderly and folks will often pause to chat. Some of my cats like to sit out so very little children (and not so little) also have something to look at.

  3. As a Harlem Stoop gardener I am constantly asked, "Isn't it going to get stolen"? After 3 years I have lost zero plants.

  4. DIW, 10 years ago that would have been a legitimate concern, stoop plantings could and where stolen, Harlem has changed a lot in recent years.

  6. Kudos to Scott, my neighbor, for his beautiful stoop (pictured above)! He's an avid horticulturalist so he'll be tickled pink by the positive feedback. You guys should check out his Halloween display!

  7. Thank you homeowners and tenants who spend their own money and time to create these amazing gardens in front for all to enjoy.

Also clearly sends a signal that someone cares about their building, block and neighborhood.

    - from someone who does not have a stoop :-)
