☞ INTRODUCING: Public Art at 51 Madison
The renovation project at 51 Madison has only really left a skeleton of the building's former grandeur but at least one local artist is attempting to make this corner of 125th Street look better. We walked by the Raymond Building this week and noticed a local artist at work on the surrounding plywood. This mural definitely looks better than the said renovations at hand which stripped the building of most of its exterior ornamentations: LINK. Does anyone know who this local artist is?

It is unfortunate how buildings spend so much time in red tape limbo while the street scape is mired by the half finished construction. The contentious corner scaffold on Lenox and 123rd comes to mind.
ReplyDeleteThis is a win win, the artist gets an audience for his work, the corner gets cheered up.
ReplyDeleteWell ... this is really very colorful vandalism. Unless he was hired by the owners (or construction company), it is vandalism. As for the quality of the "art," well, if one can't say something nice....
ReplyDeleteHarlem Art LOVER, that lives next door. Noah, Since u don't know the details it's not vandalism, since the artist paint this in broad daylight during Demo crew and ownership team (Men in suits and dress shirts) architect are around. The artist sweeps the corner b4 he start, what do u call that? "VANDALISM" because he'd like the corner to look crisp. That doesn't sound/look like vandalism to me.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful way to donate ones time to making Manhattan a livable and cheerful place! I am from Denmark and I just love to see this art on ugly, grotesque, construction walls!!! The walls are an eyesore, but now they lift the hearts of the passersby! I walk this way everyday now and all the business in this area gets my money cause I stop everywhere here for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Kudos to this wonderful Artist, who helps the community! He needs a great rep!
