☞ LISTEN: Activity at the Cecil Hotel and Minton's
Another legendary Harlem jazz spot might also be going under a few changes and come back better than ever. Minton's Playhouse has been shuttered for some times now after a failed comeback a few years back but reports that a Citigroup chair's plans to enlarge the space into a 10,000-square-foot supper club and entertainment complex appears to be coming true.
Walking by the old Cecil Hotel at the corner of 118th and St. Nicholas Avenue, we noticed a dumpster out front and the corner space being gutted last week. Permits have been filed for a new drinking and eating establishment and work seems to have begun on expanding Minton's which is just the next adjacent storefront in the complex. The Harlem Community Development Corporation has a public notice up that confirms the lease transfer to the prominent said executive so all appears to be moving forward with the new Minton's: LINK.

Thank you for linking those documents. It states the rent will increase 3% per annum. This puts the Lennox Lounge rent increase in perspective.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see life coming to this corner! Though, nervous that there will be noise issues. We absolutely love Cedric Bistro at the corner of West 119th and St. Nicholas though every now and then they like to have some loud band play until 11:30pm / 12am on weeknights
ReplyDeleteIt seems like the corridor on St. Nick's without as many churches is more of a potential for such social places! The noise on the Avenue is already less as the flow of traffic means fewer cars take this route, but as a social Avenue it makes a lot of sense!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this info, particularly the link to the actual HCDC Agenda! As a regular Lenox Lounge patron, I am trying to keep abreast of developments in the NYC jazz community.
