There appears to be some activity at the old Hamilton Theatre building in Hamilton Heights at 146th and Broadway. We walked by this past week and noticed a crew in the lobby clearing out what was left of the dollar store that used to have a lease on the ground floor. A dumpster was seen filled with debris this past weekend and the entire complex will eventually be part of a new condo development if word of mouth is correct. The Hamilton Theatre is an official New York City landmark so the front facade will at least be preserved and restored while the back end will probably have the new residential units.
Wow, how very ingenious. It's a beautiful building so I am grateful to know it has landmark status.

ReplyDeleteI really don't see how a company could rip down a landmarked theatre to build condos. The entire building landmarked, not just the front. In any case, the space is for rent, and the listing is online, so I'm not quite sure the source is accurate...
ReplyDeleteI was under the impression that this was 3 lots with 2 buildings. I know the front building (on Broadway) was landmarked. What I am not clear on was if the rear building (the actual theather) was landmarked. The rear building exterior is unremarkable, though the interior theather itself is amazing. The 3rd lot is the vacant lot on 147th st- adjacent to the rear theather. If the rumor for condo's is true- I could see it on the vacant lot, and possibly in place of the theater- though this is the part that I am uncertain if it was landmarked.
