☞ INTRODUCING: Signs Up at Harlem Hebrew

We reported earlier in the year that the Harlem Hebrew Charter School would open in South Harlem and it now looks like things might come together for classes in the fall.  We walked by this corner of 117th and St. Nicholas Avenue last week and noticed the new signage has been placed out front of the old School of St. Thomas the Apostle building.  The Catholic Church closed down operations several years back and this new educational institution represents the return of the Jewish community that once flourished in Harlem.  There is also a church around the corner which will be converted into public space and condos but that development is still in the demolition phase.

This is a good example of giving over a school to an organization that can transform the building for community us in a timely manner.  On the other side of equation, one can find a far worse example in West Harlem's PS 186 which the government sold off over 20 years ago but still remains a ruin: LINK
