☞ ARCHITECTURE: Contextual New Construction

We are amazed at what the right developer can do with new construction every time we walk by the blocks just east of FDB/8th Avenue on West 118th Street.  These handsome brownstone condos replaced a massive lot that existed on the land up until about a decade ago when development started picking up pace in an ambitious plan to revitalize Harlem.

There were probably brownstones on the land originally which had been abandoned and demolished after years of decay so this is a rather history appropriate approach to rebuilding what was lost.  These units sold out quickly and celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson was one of the original residents before purchasing a century old brownstone by Mount Morris Park West.

  1. This development always impressed me, it has aged well.

  2. Agree with commenter above. I have walked by here, and I had a hard time figuring out if these were original buildings with unusual staircases or completely new ones.
