One of the great things about a classic Harlem brownstone is the stoop out front but many have been removed in the past. There was a time in the city were stoops were probably frowned upon because they invited loitering and were deteriorating because of age.
Most stoop removals just have an incongruous doors added to basic looking lower levels but we did find one that tried to balance the new and the old. This particular brownstone just north of 125th Street had an architect recreate a balcony over the missing stoop and added additional facade detailing to the newly exposed door entrance below. This is still a little odd in itself but at least everything looks contextual when passing by.
Yes I've noticed some of the townhouses had their stoops removed and if it wasn't done right it looks hideous. But this one is the best I've seen and someone obviously had a good eye.
