☞ SHOP: M&G Diner Still Vacant

One of Harlem's oldest diners shuttered a few years back and still does not appear to have an interested party in taking over the space on 125th Street and Morningside.  The owner of the building restored everything on the facade and gutted the interior but perhaps the rent prices are too high now for any small boutique eatery to move in.

We would definitely like to see a new savvy business come in and maybe do an adaptive reuse look that retains the original sign.  This preservation of history seems to be a trend downtown but somehow uptown shops seem to miss the point.  Any suggestions on what should open at this spot?

  1. They should have left the Entire sign intact. The entire sign could have been restored to look so cool. That one part of the sign that remains alone looks ridiculous.

  2. My suggestion is bring back M&G. I miss the Fried Chicken and the gravy was so good it could be a food group all by itself. Yes the waitresses were surly but look how old they were, and the food was good. I miss M&G. Back in the day after a night of carowsing and carrying on downtown, there was nothing like getting off the A train at 125th St. and hitting up M&G for something to eat before going to bed.

  3. M&G had a great jukebox, always good music.

  4. Calling Keith McNally - this would be a gorgeous space to take under his wing. He could take what he has done with the french bistro and brasserie, or the italian pizzeria, and apply it to an old-school diner - think Union Square's Coffee Shop but better done. Recently he has shown willigness too to open up on major streets ...

  5. I agree with Robert. They left the least interesting sign up. They should put up the entire thing to have it in context.

  6. According to the management company there is supposedly a "high end sneaker store" going in, but it's been months and still nothing has happened yet.

  7. Like Greg, I remember M&G from back in the day when it was on the south side of 125 west of St. Nicholas. Needed on 125: a decent, good quality deli with a a range of options, especially for lunch.
