Between the still lingering ill-perception of excessive crime and somewhat over-priced commercial retail demands, Harlem's dining scene has had its ups and downs over the years. With that in mind, we thought it would be appropriate to go over the newish establishment that were pioneers not so long ago and who have since helped change the dining scene in Harlem.
DINOSAUR BAR-B-QUE, 700 WEST 125TH STREET AT 12TH AVENUE
Back in 2004, the notable Dinosaur BBQ took a huge step and moved into the Manhattaville warehouse district and barbecue has not been the same uptown ever since. This first NYC location proved that a big name can be successful even in the most remote part of Harlem and the BBQ spot attracts longtime locals as well as folks from downtown. The area is at a bit of a standstill because Columbia University has purchased and demolished most of the surround blocks for a new campus but a few other businesses have since arrived. Fairway supermarket also has a location just a bit north and a parking lot for customers so the part of West Harlem remains somewhat of an out-of-the-way destination.
