So our best of the week feature basically highlights something remarkable in Harlem that we tried out for the first time. There are a lot of great eats in Harlem and this ongoing series will have the best of the best.
We mentioned previously that we would definitely be back at Custom Fuel Pizza since our first experience on opening day made such a great impression. This new eatery on FDB at 123rd Street has branches in Washington DC and offers up some great custom made pies in a green environment. Over 95 percent of the interior is made out of re-claimed or recycled materials and the majority of the paper products are recycled goods also.
With all that said, the pizza is all made-to-order and has antibiotic-free ingredients. Our Best Eats of the Week goes to the Old Bay Shrimp Pizza that we had at Custom Fuel which was on whole wheat with old bay shrimp, cream sauce, bacon, parmesan, caramelized red onion, mozzarella, cilantro and lemon zest. What was especially nice about this combination is the fresh, herbal flavors which are unique for a pie. The cilantro and the bright pops of lemon peel added something new that we never experienced with pizza. Then there was the tender shrimp which were plump and full of umami. Finally, a touch of crisp bacon amplified the savory elements in this well balanced combination. All of the flavor profiles hit a strong note and this pie was well worth the $7.97 shelled out for lunch.
I absolutely love this place! A winner!
