An archival photo of a Hamilton Heights shop shows a bakery at 151st Street and Broadway back in the early century. Apparently one of the lower levels of the apartment buildings in West Harlem was a big enough setup to bake bread and those large bread paddles were stored up in the low ceilings. Hot Bread Kitchen in East Harlem makes some daily breads but for some reason most of the smaller storefronts that open in Harlem focus more on sweet baked goods such as cakes and cookies.
