SHOP: CAFFE BENE OPENING NEXT DOOR TO TASZO

It appears that a coffee chain is trying to get into the boutique cafe scene up by the 157th Street stop on the 1 Line.  Tips have come in that Caffe Bene is now set to open right next door Taszo which is one of the best independent coffee shops to be found uptown.  There are a few Caffe Bene's in the city already and all have extremely corporate looking signage but the interiors are little more thought out than that of a typical Starbucks.  With that said,  we kind of think this would have done well down on lower FDB or even 125th Street but the higher rent demands down south are probably having some of the chains look even further north for better business opportunities.

Our best bet would still be with the local guy at Taszo (the owner lives around the corner) which will outshine whatever any chain brings to the table: LINK

  1. Love that you took a field trip up here to check out the situation.

  2. I agree. It would have been nice to see it on 125th. I've been to Caffe Bene a few times and it's really good. It's a Korean brand. Hopefully they add more Uptown.

  3. Competion still breeds a better product, maybe, perhaps one we'll get a westside market or something equal.

  4. At first I was a little of put by this, but I think that Taszo seems to be smart. I noticed they've added wine and beer to their menu? While it appears to be competition, I think the businesses are different and smart enough to coexist. "Coffee Row Uptown" if you will. Not to mention, that the next biz open on the corner is Twin Donut, essentially another coffee place. I think that our uptown businesses benefit from being a destination area rather than a silo of goodness in a field of barber shops and fast food chains. I think we've created a demand for quality in our area that leaves a lot of business to go around. Harlem Public is never anything but slammin, and now a new place is opening and I can't see that hurting HP one bit.
