QUESTION: WHAT'S UP WITH THE STRIVERS SHOPS?

It now appears that every single storefront on FDB by Strivers Row has been completely gutted between 138th and 139th  but what is actually happening to the space?  This is one of those mysterious prime pieces of historic property that has been underutilized in years especially since the housing above has been boarded up.  Whoever owns the building seems to be planning for some major retail to arrive but it would be nice to see the rest of the building restored. Any tips out there?

  1. There's an active permit in place for 6 residential units per floor (up from the current layout of 2 per floor) plus rooftop access.

I thought I remembered reading something about the beams in the cellar holding up the ground floor having suffered water damage causing them to kick out Tear Drops of Elegance and the check cashing store in order to remedy the situation, but I can't seem to find it.

  2. Anonymous you are absolutely correct! Also, the retail spots on East 132nd St. to East 134th on 5th Avenue have been boarded up for sometime now.

  3. I heard that they are trying to get better retail and to renovate the apartments upstairs into condos.

  4. This spot has been vacant for over 40 years or more. Glad to see something happening now.
