ARCHITECTURE: DOUBLE RAIL CARS CIRCA 1940
Who can guess this Harlem intersection taken circa 1940? One can tell that an avenue is towards the back since the elevated subway station can be seen. This cross street is also notable today because of the grand building to the right which unfortunately will not be around too much longer.
ANSWER: The lower photo shows the building on the corner of St. Nicholas and 125th Street right before the demolition process began a few weeks back. The elevated subway in the background notably traversed 8th Avenue before being dismantled within a decade after the top photo was taken.

125 and St. Nicholas. The elevated train in the background is 8th Ave (FDB).
ReplyDeleteIs it possible that this is West 125th St. looking East? The building to the right is that large apartment building on the corner of 125th & St. Nicholas that has been empty for awhile. On close inspection, I think one can make out the back of the Theresa Hotel.
ReplyDeletewhy can't NY and other cities correct a major wrong and restore streetcars?
ReplyDeletecheaper and less disruptive then new subway construction.
lets bring it back to the table!
