BESPOKE: TWO FASHION VIEWS OF HARLEM

Fashion editorials taken on site in Harlem tend to go two routes that are quite opposite of one another and often show the duality of how the media views uptown's historic neighborhood.  Back in 2009, Harpers Bazaar ran a glamorous jazz themed campaign that celebrated Harlem's great legacy with some of the major landmarks of the neighborhood as the focal point (top photo).  More recently, Vogue has gone the usual route by emphasizing a grittier, New York City feel for the neighborhood.  We actually like both aspects since the city is all about contradictions but tend to think that going against common perception is the most dramatic fashion statement one can make.  See the full current Vogue spread online: LINK
