EAT: HARLEM'S SOUL FOOD BUFFET

Most folks can't afford to eat out at even a moderate priced restaurant everyday of the week so the local buffets are a favorite with uptowners.  We often stop by the Jacob's on Lenox by 129th Street to grab a quick bite to save time and the staff is also quite nice.  As with most buffets, everything is fresher earlier on when just prepared so getting there in the early hours is better than later.  We sampled some of the southern standards such as Hoppin John with smoked ham hocks, mac and cheese along with some fried chicken during a recent lunch break and everything was around $5 altogether.  The pigeon peas was the best out of the bunch but the mac was dry and the chicken just somewhere in the middle. As far as buffets go, this is what one usually gets so spending a little more at the pricier options uptown does make sense for those more special occasions.

  1. I had Jacobs cater my post marathon party. The food was great. Mac and cheese, fried chicken, and awesome potato salad.

  2. My favs there are: the jerk wings ( spicy!), ox tails, short ribs, honey wings, rice & peas, cold aspargus (nice & crunchy) and the corn bread

  3. Second on the jerk. Good stuff. Love the oxtails, corn bread, potato salad and mac and cheese. The food turnover is usually quick so you don't get limp food in those steam trays.
