UPDATE: MISHKIN'S APPARENTLY HAS GONE THROUGH THE PROCESS OF LANDMARK REVIEW IN THE PAST BUT MAY NOT BE AN OFFICIAL LANDMARK OF THE CITY.
One of the rare storefronts
protected by reviewed for NYC landmark designations can be found on 145th Street but somehow recent renovations appear to be less historically accurate. Walking by this corner of Amsterdam Avenue recently, we noticed that workers were finishing up on a new awning and had removed the original painted sign (lower photo). The neon is still up but the rest of the shop looks like one of those moderate businesses that populate broadway and not a respectable old establishment. Does anyone know how this happened? Mishkin's has been part of the neighborhood since 1890 and this new alteration does not really seem to fit in with the history here:

What a shame
ReplyDeleteThis is terrible. Can't anything be done? This is happening all over Harlem and it really doesn't have to be like this.
ReplyDeleteHere they are trying to improve the store's look with new signage. Why not be more encouraging of their effort?
ReplyDeleteYeah this is pretty terrible, walked past a couple times and I have no idea what they were thinking ripping out all the nice old woodwork and replacing it with ugly particleboard and flourescent lighting. Looks like every other dump now, sadly, but at least they're still in business.
