REMEMBER: THE RUINS OF MOUNT MORRIS PARK WEST

During the last couple of decades Harlem's former decline, the block of Mount Morris West by 120th Street used to be called The Ruins by locals and those without imagination might have thought they were not salvageable.  We often hear folks look at old buildings and say that they are an eyesore or the only option is demolition but The Ruins is a good example of the proper way to keep the character of a  neighborhood .  The right developer eventually came along who reviewed old historic photos of each townhouse to make sure that the facades would be accurate to their original details and started the process of reconstructing what was left of the block over a decade ago.  At the end, the entire development of 1-9 Mount Morris Park West debuted in 2002 with 36 condo apartments in total and have been a success.  This proves that anything can pretty much be saved if the right partners are involved and making a huge profit is not the end goal.

  2. Let this be a lesson to owners of the Renaissance Casino and Ballroom who claim it can't be salvaged and must be torn down. We've made great progress recently preserving Harlem's history, but there's still much to save.
